Essential Office Equipment: Keyboard

I have been in need of a new keyboard for a while now, since my old one had been leaving out letters at will and gotten louder and louder over time. After spending quite a bit of time in the keyboard isle of several electronics stores, I chose this one: the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750.

In addition to it being wireless – something I had been thinking about, since I have all kinds of cables on my desktop already -, it is also completely solar powered, which makes me very happy (I try to be green whenever and wherever I can). It also works with artificial light, so even if you have a spell of overcast weather like we’ve been having here lately or don’t have any real light reaching you (I hope not?!!), it still works just fine. A nifty little button lets you see if the light source is sufficient for charging, which also works great as a reminder to turn on extra light, before you’re squinting at the monitor…
It is also very thin and has the same kind of keys I prefer on a laptop, which is really the main reason why I chose this keyboard over others. I just love typing on it! Because of this, I can even live with the lack of an indicator light telling me whether my CAPS-LOCK is on or the numeric keypad is active. There are also quite a few quick-link buttons, for example for opening the calculator, sending mail, activating and operating the music player, etc.

Connecting it to the PC was very easy: all I had to do was to plug the supplied Logitech Unifying receiver into a USB port, turn on the keyboard, and start typing! No software installation was required, and it worked right away. According to Logitech, the Unifying receiver also allows you to connect additional wireless devices without having to plug in multiple USB receivers, but since (so far) the keyboard is the only wireless device I have, I can’t say if that works or not.
Overall, I am very happy with my new keyboard: I love the way the slightly concave keys feel and the to my ears pleasant sound (I need to hear something when I work) while typing. I have one less cable cluttering up my desk and getting caught, and I can literally sit back and relax and still type comfortably even from across the room – although that makes it kind of hard to see the monitor… 😉
