It’s coming, it’s been coming for a while now, but in recent weeks, it has really come to the fore in discussions everywhere and on all channels – you really can’t get around it, especially in the freelancing part of the language industry. I know I have had my fill of it, and yet I need to still deal with it more, because, well the law is the law and there really is no getting around it.
In case you haven’t heard or guessed by now: I’m talking about GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation coming into force in the EU on May 25.
I don’t know how many hours I’ve spent on this these last weeks and especially days, scouring the internet, writing e-mails, talking on the phone, joining discussion in forums, participating in webinars, and still there are no really clear answers to be found, probably because the lawmakers themselves seem to be somewhat vague about the actual realization.
Well, I have found some more helpful sites, and I would like to share one of them with you: the blog post «Marketing and GDPR for freelancers – special timely guest post» by Jo Rourke on Tess Whitty‘s Marketing Tips for Translators website. It includes good, concise information and even an action plan, which I personally always find very helpful, especially to get started on a subject like this.
I’m sure there will be more posts as I am starting to figure things out and as things are (hopefully) becoming clearer on the political front, as well.
Until then, we’ll just have to soldier on and try not to get too frustrated, I guess…
