\nIn honor of having given my very first class lecture on terminology today, here’s a great glossary every translator should strive to learn by heart  (found over on the website of the Terminology Coordination Unit<\/a>):<\/p>\n

\nFunny glossary of translating<\/h1>\n

20,000 words:<\/strong> The amount of words (some) clients think can be translated overnight.<\/p>\n

\n
\nBack translation:<\/strong> (1) I can\u2019t proofread and I don\u2019t
\ntrust you. Send translation of your translation.
\n(2) When the chicken and egg conundrum becomes a language assignment.<\/p>\n

Briefing for copywriting style adaptation:<\/strong> Are extremely short and leave the copywriter with more
\nquestions than answers.<\/p>\n

Capital letters:<\/strong> Something that clients love to put in and translators love to take out.<\/p>\n

CAT Tool:<\/strong> a piece of string used to play with your feline friend whilst your TM program reboots.<\/p>\n

Charm:<\/strong> A coercive ploy used by clients when they need you to dig them out of a hole.<\/p>\n

Client:<\/strong> \u201cPlease provide some alternative headlines\u201d = \u201cWe have no idea what the message is\u201d.<\/p>\n

Customer feedback:<\/strong> A lengthy exchange of emails
\nwhere the customer attempts to insert error in a
\ntranslation, resulting
\nin attempts to insert errors in a translation, resulting in a debate of
\nlife, the
\nuniverse and everything.<\/p>\n

Deadline:<\/strong> (1) The unreasonable delivery schedule
\nthat will almost kill the translator, but not quite.
\n(2) Deadlines:
\nClients love to give them, but (some) hate to keep them when they\u2019re on
\nthe bottom of an invoice.<\/p>\n

Dictionary:<\/strong> Gives you every alternative except that elusive word you are searching for.<\/p>\n

Excel Files:<\/strong> A file format used by clients who don\u2019t know how to create tables in Word files.<\/p>\n

Fee<\/strong>: The tiny figure on your bank account that keeps you from starving and that clients make such a
\nfuss about.<\/p>\n

Feedback:<\/strong> Something that is never forthcoming unless it\u2019s negative. Not to be confused with
\ncomplaint!<\/p>\n

Friday night:<\/strong> chances are big your favorite client asks for a huge translation due 9am on Monday.<\/p>\n

Holidays:<\/strong> non-existing term in translators\u2019 community.<\/p>\n

OCR:<\/strong> A tool that scans the words \u201cI love you\u201d as \u201c1 i0u3 40v\u201d.<\/p>\n

PDF:<\/strong> A file format used when the client has lost the original source text.<\/p>\n

PPT files:<\/strong> A file format used by people who are planning to bore their audience to death.<\/p>\n

Pre-booked Job Date:<\/strong> The day *after* the day that the client promised to deliver a pre-booked job
\nfor translation.<\/p>\n

Proofreading by the client:<\/strong> The phase of implementing spelling and grammar errors.<\/p>\n

Proofreading:<\/strong> The PERECT job for grammar-obsessed pedants.<\/p>\n

Relevant background material:<\/strong> 20 GB of completely useless stuff.<\/p>\n

Research:<\/strong> five hours spent on the internet looking for two words, only to be told it\u2019s a typo and to
\nleave them out.<\/p>\n

Rush fee:<\/strong> Trying to sell a ten percent raise as a hundred percent raise.<\/p>\n

Sample Translation<\/strong>: A long document a client has split between 20 agencies as a way of getting the
\nwork done for free.<\/p>\n

Slush Pile:<\/strong> The pile that translation agencies put emails in when job-hunting translators *BCC* a
\npitch to 500 agencies.<\/p>\n

Social media:<\/strong> now your whole extended family and friends of friends can ask for free translations.<\/p>\n

Source copy in JPG file:<\/strong> the ultimate nightmare.<\/p>\n

Tab Stops<\/strong>: Used by clients\/translators who don\u2019t know how to create tables in Word files.<\/p>\n

Ten free test translations a day keep the translator\u2019s money away.<\/p>\n

Transcreation:<\/strong> (1) a service for clients who know
\ntheir source copy is crap. (2) The best excuse to do
\nwhatever you want by contract.<\/p>\n

Translation Agency:<\/strong> The pariah in the middle of the client\/supplier sandwich.<\/p>\n

Translation theory:<\/strong> That thing they teach you in school that you never quite seem to use in the real
\nworld.<\/p>\n

Translator:<\/strong> A person expected to do today what the client should have done yesterday.<\/p>\n

ttx file:<\/strong> a supposedly interchange file format that doesn\u2019t \u201cinterchange\u201d at all.<\/p>\n

Twitter:<\/strong> A tool to reassure translators that Armageddon didn\u2019t happen whilst they were racing to a
\n30k word deadline.<\/p>\n

Weekends:<\/strong> The 2 days between Friday and Monday when clients mini-break in Paris whilst
\ntranslators are expected to work.<\/p>\n

White Space:<\/strong> Something that clients never leave in PPT docs and are then surprised when their
\ntranslated files look blah.<\/p>\n
