\nThere’s a lot going on in the translator community right now, many hot topics are being discussed quite passionately, and I will try to put my 2 cents in, as well, but not today. The last few weeks were quite grueling for me, having had to balance teaching 12 hours a week with a regular translating workload, i.e. working two jobs with having only the 24 hours each day provides. This made for short nights, and I am pretty beat and looking forward to the weekend, once I have made it through tomorrow’s seminar.<\/i>
\nSo in order to lighten things up a bit, I want to share this tounge-in-cheek post<\/a> by <\/i>Laura Spencer I found over at the Freelancefolder<\/a> a while ago. Enjoy! \ud83d\ude42<\/i><\/p>\n

Are too many people finding out that you\u2019re a freelancer? Are you
\nconstantly bothered by those pesky requests for people wanting to engage
\n you for your services? Are friends and family members referring new
\nbusiness to you?

\nIf you really want to, you can make all that stop. All you need to do
\n is become a secret freelancer. If no one knows you are a freelancer, no
\n one will bother you about it.<\/p>\n

\nHow to Keep Your Freelancing Business a Secret<\/h3>\n

So, for whatever reason, you\u2019ve decided to keep your freelancing business a secret. Here\u2019s how to do it:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Don\u2019t tell friends or family.<\/strong> No one can know that
    \nyou run a freelance business. It would be better for your friends and
    \nfamily to think you sit at home all day watching TV than for the secret
    \nto get out. Better yet, sit at home all day watching TV.<\/li>\n
  2. Don\u2019t fill out your profiles on social media.<\/strong> That
    \ndefault image that comes with new social media profiles is good enough
    \nfor you. Never ever fill out your profile or refer to your freelancing
    \nbusiness on social media in any way.<\/li>\n
  3. Better yet, don\u2019t have profiles on social media.<\/strong>
    \nWho needs social media anyway? It will only draw attention to you and
    \nsomeone might find out about your freelancing business. Delete any
    \naccounts you\u2019ve already created and stay away from social platforms.<\/li>\n
  4. Don\u2019t answer your email promptly.<\/strong> If you don\u2019t
    \nanswer your email, clients and prospects will think you\u2019ve gone out of
    \nbusiness. If you wait long enough, they\u2019ll stop sending you those
    \nbothersome emails and move on to a less secretive freelancer.<\/li>\n
  5. Don\u2019t network in person.<\/strong> No need to have an elevator pitch,
    \n but you\u2019ll have to watch what you say around people. You might
    \naccidentally let it slip that you freelance. Better yet, stay away from
    \npeople. If you don\u2019t talk to anyone, you can\u2019t spill the beans.<\/li>\n
  6. Don\u2019t blog.<\/strong> Blogs are a lot of extra work\u2013who needs
    \n them. The freshly updated content will just cause the search engines to
    \n crawl your website more frequently and might cause it to rank better in
    \n the search engines. Better yet, see the tip below.<\/li>\n
  7. Don\u2019t have a website.<\/strong> A freelancing website is
    \ndefinitely a no no if you\u2019re trying to become a secret freelancer. Even
    \nif you exclude contact information and leave off an about page someone might trace the site back to you.<\/li>\n
  8. Don\u2019t have a portfolio.<\/strong> You want your freelancing
    \nbusiness to be the best kept secret on the planet, right? Well, then
    \nskip creating a portfolio. Since you\u2019re a secret freelancer, you
    \nprobably don\u2019t have much to put in a portfolio anyway.<\/li>\n
  9. Don\u2019t apply for gigs.<\/strong> This may seem obvious, but
    \nmany would-be secret freelancers mess up right here. They apply for a
    \ngig and the word gets out that they are a freelancer. Clients talk. If
    \nyou apply for gigs, eventually someone will mention it.<\/li>\n
  10. Don\u2019t use your own name.<\/strong> Don\u2019t use your freelancing
    \n business name either. Those names might somehow be traced back to you.
    \nTry something generic like, hmmm, John or Jane Doe. Or call yourself
    \nanonymous.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
