\nPoem for the Winter Solstice <\/u><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n One morning
\nyou raise the east window blinds <\/span><\/div>\n
\nand there
\nis the sun, hunched on the horizon, <\/span><\/div>\n
\ndoing its
\nbest to break free, shunting aside <\/span><\/div>\n
\na few
\nclouds as it hoists itself in readiness to skate <\/span><\/div>\n
\na frigid
\nrink of sky, firing that cloud layer <\/span><\/div>\n
\nwith
\ndeceptive warmth, an intense roseate glow.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\nThis is winter
\nmorning<\/i>, you say to yourself, <\/span><\/div>\n
\nbut then
\nyou realize \u2014 and it comes as a shock \u2014<\/span><\/div>\n
\nthat the
\nsun has risen so far south, you feel <\/span><\/div>\n
\nyour house
\nhas been wrenched a quarter-twist <\/span><\/div>\n
\nto the
\nright while you slept. You check your watch \u2014<\/span><\/div>\n
\nmigod, it\u2019s
\ncoming nine o\u2019clock. <\/span><\/div>\n
\nWhen did
\nthis happen?<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\nThe wall
\ncalendar tells you it\u2019s December, <\/span><\/div>\n
\nbut
\nsomething deep within you has clung<\/span><\/div>\n
\nto the
\nlingering warmth of snowless autumn.<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThe body
\ndeplores this retreat towards the dark,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nthe dimming
\ndays, the physical affront of cold. <\/span><\/div>\n
\nAlready,
\nunseen crevices within us are busy<\/span><\/div>\n
\nre-programming
\nthe spirit for spring.<\/span><\/div>\n
