\nAfraid to stand up to that pushy customer and risk losing the job,
\nmany entrepreneurs agree to supply their wonderful services for an
\nunrealistic mix of money, quality and time.\n<\/div>\n

\nCharging for services can be tricky, especially if you\u2019re running a
\none-person show and typically earn by the hour because every customer
\nwants the job done \u2018good, fast and cheap\u2019.\n<\/div>\n
\n
\nYou\u2019ve likely heard this one before.\n<\/div>\n
\n
\nThe customer wants high quality work from you (so they can look good
\nto their boss) to be completed in a very short time (because they failed
\n to plan ahead) for very little money (because they failed to establish
\nadequate budgets).<\/div>\n
\n
\nNext time you\u2019re asked to quote, present the words \u2018good, fast and cheap.\u2019 Tell them they can have two.<\/div>\n
\n
\nFor example, if your work must be \u2018good and fast\u2019, explain to your
\ncustomer how you must displace other paying customers, work late into
\nthe night, miss out on family time, skip meals and chain yourself to the
\n desk. You may be willing to do all that for a premium rate.<\/div>\n
\n
\nIf they want it \u2018cheap and good\u2019 \u2013 guess what? It won\u2019t be done
\nquickly because you must first attend to other, better paying jobs that
\nare already scheduled for completion. Lower-paying work is done during
\noff-peak hours whenever you can get to it and will therefore take longer
\n to finish.<\/div>\n
\n
\n\u2018Fast and cheap\u2019 delivers a result that won\u2019t be very good. Without
\nthe customer investment of sufficient production time and adequate
\nbudget, quality will suffer because you must rush. In fact, you may opt
\nto preserve your good reputation by declining such work, or referring a
\ncolleague who is willing to do it.<\/div>\n
\n
\nYou get the idea. Customers will always demand good, fast and cheap together; but, time, money and quality are opposites.<\/div>\n
\n
\nBoost your bucks, reduce your stress and protect your reputation by
\ntaking reasonable control of such customer expectations. Your work is
\nworth it.<\/div>\n
