The message usually begins in<br \/>\nsimilar fashion regardless of whether it is a phone call, email or text<br \/>\nmessage and whatever the nature of your relationship with the<br \/>\ninterlocutor \u2013 a polite yet brief query as to how you have been these<br \/>\npast few weeks\/months\/years in order to momentarily detract from the<br \/>\nmain point of the message. Your suspicions are raised immediately \u2013 this<br \/>\n is not the first such message you have received from \u2018friends\u2019 \u2013 yet<br \/>\nyou remain quietly heartened by the fact that this person has decided to<br \/>\n contact you after such a long time.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nHowever, you listen\/read on and within<br \/>\nseveral seconds your fears are confirmed. Your mind is awash with a<br \/>\nrange of emotions \u2013 anger, frustration and disappointment. Once again,<br \/>\nanother of your so-called \u2018friends\u2019 has demonstrated their complete lack<br \/>\n of respect for your profession, not to mention an utter lack of respect<br \/>\n for yourself. This \u2018friend\u2019 has done the unthinkable \u2013 he has asked you<br \/>\n for \u2018help\u2019 in order to translate a phrase\/sentence\/text.&nbsp;The plea is<br \/>\nusually innocent and nine times out of ten the task is ridiculously<br \/>\nsimple but&nbsp;what especially irks is the justification this person uses to<br \/>\n ask you in the first place. Perfunctory explanations like, \u201cI know it<br \/>\nwon\u2019t take you a great deal of time\u2026\u201d or syrupy statements like, \u201cFor<br \/>\nsomeone like you, this should be really easy\u2026\u201d or to really add insult<br \/>\nto injury, \u201cThis should take you five minutes at most\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nWho are these people to determine the<br \/>\nperiod of time a translation task should take? And then demand that we<br \/>\nperform the task? What is more, the very fact that it would take, for<br \/>\nexample,&nbsp;<em>only&nbsp;<\/em>five minutes is surely testament to the fact that<br \/>\n we are good at our job. Specialists, as we all know, are usually richly<br \/>\n rewarded for their<em>&nbsp;specialist<\/em>&nbsp;services.&nbsp;Why is it that people<br \/>\nwho are not translators believe translation should be undertaken for<br \/>\nfree?&nbsp;Do architects receive calls from friends to \u2018do a quick sketch\u2019 of<br \/>\n a proposed design of a room? Do copywriters get text messages from<br \/>\ncolleagues to \u2018come up with a short slogan\u2019 for a product? Do<br \/>\naccountants receive emails from clients asking them to \u2018undertake a<br \/>\nbrief audit\u2019 of an investment?<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nTranslators, language specialists and<br \/>\neditors need to show people unfamiliar with our work that the services<br \/>\nwe offer are akin to those services provided by&nbsp;other professions. Not<br \/>\nonly do we have similar time constraints and financial requirements but<br \/>\nwe also have the need to gain satisfaction from our work. Respect for<br \/>\nthe work we do is key to achieving this satisfaction. In today\u2019s<br \/>\nsociety, the one tangible way in which measure for our work can be<br \/>\nachieved is through remuneration.
