Here’s a good write-up<\/a> on a situation most of us are <\/span>familiar with, also called The Favor! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nYou\u2019re sitting at home (or at work)
\nslaving over a translation when out of the blue you receive a
\ncall\/email\/text message* (delete where appropriate) from a
\ncolleague\/friend\/acquaintance* (delete where appropriate) who you have
\nnot heard from for quite some time. The message usually begins in
\nsimilar fashion regardless of whether it is a phone call, email or text
\nmessage and whatever the nature of your relationship with the
\ninterlocutor \u2013 a polite yet brief query as to how you have been these
\npast few weeks\/months\/years in order to momentarily detract from the
\nmain point of the message. Your suspicions are raised immediately \u2013 this
\n is not the first such message you have received from \u2018friends\u2019 \u2013 yet
\nyou remain quietly heartened by the fact that this person has decided to
\n contact you after such a long time.<\/div>\n
\nHowever, you listen\/read on and within
\nseveral seconds your fears are confirmed. Your mind is awash with a
\nrange of emotions \u2013 anger, frustration and disappointment. Once again,
\nanother of your so-called \u2018friends\u2019 has demonstrated their complete lack
\n of respect for your profession, not to mention an utter lack of respect
\n for yourself. This \u2018friend\u2019 has done the unthinkable \u2013 he has asked you
\n for \u2018help\u2019 in order to translate a phrase\/sentence\/text. The plea is
\nusually innocent and nine times out of ten the task is ridiculously
\nsimple but what especially irks is the justification this person uses to
\n ask you in the first place. Perfunctory explanations like, \u201cI know it
\nwon\u2019t take you a great deal of time\u2026\u201d or syrupy statements like, \u201cFor
\nsomeone like you, this should be really easy\u2026\u201d or to really add insult
\nto injury, \u201cThis should take you five minutes at most\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n
\nWho are these people to determine the
\nperiod of time a translation task should take? And then demand that we
\nperform the task? What is more, the very fact that it would take, for
\nexample, only <\/em>five minutes is surely testament to the fact that
\n we are good at our job. Specialists, as we all know, are usually richly
\n rewarded for their specialist<\/em> services. Why is it that people
\nwho are not translators believe translation should be undertaken for
\nfree? Do architects receive calls from friends to \u2018do a quick sketch\u2019 of
\n a proposed design of a room? Do copywriters get text messages from
\ncolleagues to \u2018come up with a short slogan\u2019 for a product? Do
\naccountants receive emails from clients asking them to \u2018undertake a
\nbrief audit\u2019 of an investment?<\/div>\n
\nTranslators, language specialists and
\neditors need to show people unfamiliar with our work that the services
\nwe offer are akin to those services provided by other professions. Not
\nonly do we have similar time constraints and financial requirements but
\nwe also have the need to gain satisfaction from our work. Respect for
\nthe work we do is key to achieving this satisfaction. In today\u2019s
\nsociety, the one tangible way in which measure for our work can be
\nachieved is through remuneration. This is, after all, what we do for a
\nliving\u2026<\/div>\n
