\nMy office is closed for a few days over Easter, so I’m taking the easy way out this week by sharing a great article<\/a> by Debbie Swanson on the Freelance Switch<\/a> blog. Having two dogs myself, I can really recommend it!<\/i><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

Most freelancers are eager for tips and information, turning to
\nforums, classes, and networking for ways to learn and improve. But did
\nyou ever consider looking to your canine for some wisdom? Here are a few
\n things your dog knows that just may improve your freelancing life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWalk it Off<\/span><\/h4>\n

If you keep to set work hours, it may seem wrong to interrupt those
\nby taking a nice long walk. But there are always those \u2018off\u2019 days: your
\nbrain just isn\u2019t cooperating, the contacts you need are all unavailable,
\n or some other worry is dominating your thoughts. Why not take a walk?<\/p>\n

A change of scene and some exercise can be more productive than
\nstaying parked at your laptop. You may be hit with fresh inspiration,
\nor, you may work out whatever issue was holding you back. Next time work
\n isn\u2019t flowing, don\u2019t force it by staring at your computer. Grab the
\nnearest dog, turn off your smartphone, and take a walk.<\/p>\n

\nNetwork Everywhere<\/span><\/h4>\n

If dogs were freelancers, they\u2019d have low advertising budgets and
\npacked schedules. After all, what dog can pass another dog, or person,
\nwithout itching to say hello? And once the \u2018hello\u2019 goes well (which it
\nusually does), they\u2019ll go into a full introduction, then seal the deal
\nwith some playtime or affection. Instant connections!<\/p>\n

While greeting people that zealously may raise an eyebrow, you can
\nstill learn from his techniques. At your next networking event, think
\nlike a dog \u2013 of course you should stop and say hello. Why wouldn\u2019t that
\nperson want to talk to you? When you are out and about your everyday
\nlife, take stock of the people you pass. Say hello more.  Exchange
\npleasantries with those you repeatedly cross paths with. Word of mouth
\nis the best, and cheapest, form of advertising.<\/p>\n

\nDon\u2019t Forgo Sleep<\/span><\/h4>\n

You have three looming deadlines, a family reunion in the planning,
\nand two kids in the height of soccer playoffs. You may be desperate to
\nsqueeze some extra time out of your day, but take your canine\u2019s example,
\n and don\u2019t skimp on sleep. <\/a><\/p>\n

Sleep is an important commodity to a freelancer. One abbreviated
\nnight\u2019s sleep can leave you slow and groggy the next day. Several
\nsleep-cheated nights may get your project done in time, but you\u2019ll be
\nleft worn out, irritable, and susceptible to illness.<\/p>\n

Take your pup\u2019s example. No matter how many tennis balls he intends
\nto chase in one day, he still maintains a solid sleep schedule around
\nit.<\/p>\n

\nProtect your Territory<\/span><\/h4>\n

Friendly as they are, a dog is also very protective. He may be happy
\nto see just about anyone, but when someone ventures a bit too close
\nwithout being invited, a warning bark may be in order.<\/p>\n

The same applies to freelancing. It\u2019s great to share ideas,
\nknowledge, and the occasional lead with colleagues.  It\u2019s admirable to
\ngive a newcomer advice or resources to get them started. But it\u2019s also
\nimportant to know what to protect. If a colleague is always hitting you
\nup without giving back, or if a newcomer repeatedly asks the same
\nquestions while making no effort on her own, perhaps it\u2019s time for that
\nwarning bark.<\/p>\n

\nDon\u2019t Eliminate Your Treats<\/span><\/h4>\n

Have you ever seen your dog forgo his daily game of Frisbee, or turn
\naway a chew toy, because he\u2019s just got too much to do? One of the
\nbenefits of freelancing is giving yourself time to hit the gym, see your
\n child\u2019s school play, or have coffee with a colleague.<\/p>\n

No matter your worries, take time to do the things you enjoy. Of
\ncourse, there will be times where you\u2019ll have to make compromises, but
\ndon\u2019t slide too far down that slippery slope of constantly shortchanging
\n yourself. Over the year, maintain a healthy balance of work and play.<\/p>\n
